Summer fashion to keep you cool

With summer weather comes summer clothes — sundresses, shorts and skirts! Oh my!

It's important to keep a few things in mind when shopping and dressing for trends — especially summer trends. Shape, comfort, weather and budget are just a few of the things that should come to mind when picking the perfect outfit.

This summer you'll see lots of light, sheer fabrics, bright colours and lots of skin for the warmer weather. Wearing clothing that shows a sliver of midriff or features sexy cut-outs is a great way to keep cool in the heat and keep up with the latest trends. On cooler days, you can try wearing highwaisted pants, layered clothing and neutral colours.

Leigh-Ann Waller, Fanshawe's Fashion Design program co-ordinator, cautioned, “There are so many trends and they are subjective to different groups of people. A college student won't be wearing the same thing as a businesswoman.”

“Every season has macro trends. This season, it's bold prints, bright colours, cut-outs ... But trends really depend on the retailer and who's wearing them,” she advised.

When it comes to less-than-awesome summer weather, Waller suggested wearing layers. “Try wearing a camisole under a shirt or shorts under a skirt with more volume to it.”

Waller also mentioned that while fashion trends are chosen up to two years in advance, styles are always changing. “Everything factors (into) trends. Economic issues, politics, catastrophes and social problems influence colour and direction. Fashion evolves and changes with what's going on in the world.”

The Internet has forced the world to become much smaller. European and other cultures are now constantly able to reach and influence Western fashion design. This wasn't the case years ago. “Western fashion was usually a year or so behind European fashion.” This season, however, you can see a European influence in the vivid prints and flowing fabrics.

For more advice on the latest fashion styles, Waller recommended using magazine websites. Flare.com, ellecanada.com, vogue.com and style.com are a few websites worth checking out when looking for the latest trends, no matter the season.
