Kiss boredom goodbye with hot events in the city

KISSES, a monthly party put on by Follow the L, is a platform for local talent, sometimes raises money for good causes and is always a whole lot of fun.

Layla Adonia is just finishing up Fanshawe's post-grad Marketing Management program, and is putting what she's learned to good use as the Event Coordinator and Director of Communications for Follow the L, which she founded.

This month's KISSES event takes place on April 27 at Cello Supper Club (99 King St.). This month, they're celebrating the first anniversary of jonlines.com, a music and lifestyle blog based in London. “Jon Lines is a skater/hip-hop/rock kinda dude and he's really cool,” said Adonia.

Adonia, a London native, was inspired to create KISSES parties after moving to Toronto for a few years. “When I came back (to London), I was kind of like, ‘Ugh, I can't deal with these London bars and parties and all that,'” she laughed. “‘Let me bring a little bit of Toronto to London.'”

Traveling to places like Atlanta, Georgia, where many VIP sections in clubs offer hookah, inspired Adonia to host hookah parties here in London. When they began three years ago, KISSES parties took place at the Exhale hookah lounge on Richmond Street.

After the parties gained a steady crowd, people started asking for more variety. “It was something different. People were like, ‘You guys should switch it up and have a reason to do it every month. That's what we're trying to do now,” Adonia explained. Sometimes KISSES celebrate the holiday of the month, such as Valentine's Day in February, and other times they raise money for important causes or showcase local talent. Previous KISSES events have included Richie Blackz's “London Town” music video release party and a party that raised enough money to send three children in Honduras to school for a year.

KISSES events are now hosted at Cello each month. “We want to keep it at more intimate, smaller venues; lounges — small, posh places like Cello — are what we aim for,” said Adonia, adding that she is always looking into expanding into new venues.

Check out the next KISSES party, which will feature DJ Penny, at Cello on April 27. Admission is $5 before midnight, $10 after, and doors open at 10:30 p.m. It's a party you should definitely kiss and tell about.
