Around the OHL: Who will be number one?

The Hamilton Spectator Trophy is awarded to the regular season champions — the team with the best overall record. I have narrowed it down to these top four candidates:

London Knights (47-17-0-1)
Plymouth Whalers (46-17-2-1)
Niagara IceDogs (44-18-03)
Ottawa 67's (39-18-5-3)

I want to say London will win the OHL's Hamilton Spectator Trophy, but I'm not 100 per cent sold yet on whether or not they have enough gas in the tank. London does want it, but something is not clicking on the ice. I believe that it is London's secondary scoring; they are not showing up for the big games. As of March 13, London's last 10 games they have gone 5-5 — not good enough, especially when you look at who is right behind them, tied in points (95) but with one more game played: the Plymouth Whalers.

On a nine-game winning streak in their last 10 games, Plymouth is hot right now and it's at the right time as well, going into playoffs, with two games left against tough teams: Sault Ste. Marie and Sarnia. Can they keep pushing forward and post 99 points on the year? It's possible — Sarnia lost Nail Yakupov to injury, but Sault Ste. Marie is on the outside looking in when it comes to playoffs and this is a must-win game for the Greyhounds.

The Ottawa 67's are out of the race as far as I'm concerned. With three games left — two against topthree teams in the Eastern Conference — they won't be able to post enough points to even be considered OHL's best team. I will give them an honourable mention, though, and I expect Ottawa to make some noise in the playoffs as the number-two seed.

Finally, we are left with the Niagara IceDogs. These guys have depth in their line-up and they are going to be my top pick for the playoffs. When it comes to whether or not they win OHL's Hamilton Spectator Trophy, they are out. They ran out of time this year, but as far as I'm concerned, they will be the last team standing at the end of playoffs. These guys are just so strong overall, especially their scoring and their defence. The Niagara IceDogs are my pick for the OHL Championship but not the OHL's Hamilton Spectator Trophy.

My top three:
1. London Knights
2. Plymouth Whalers
3. Niagara IceDogs

London will just need to win two games to clinch the top team in the Western Conference and the OHL's Hamilton Spectator Trophy, and they have three games left before playoffs. It's in their hands, which is the reason why I picked them as number one, only because Plymouth ran out of time. With a 5-5 record in their last 10, it will be interesting to see if they can turn it around but I think they will. Playoffs? That's a different story.
