Around the OHL: Game of the year

Every year there is one game that everyone talks about. Although we already had a bench brawl at the John Labatt Centre, the London-Plymouth game on February 10 has the potential to be the game.

The CHL top 10 rankings have the 37-10-0-1 London Knights ranked number one, and the 34-12-2-1 Plymouth Whalers at number seven as of week 18. These two teams had completely different approaches to the trade deadline: the London Knights made huge moves to shake things up in the their dressing room, while Plymouth took a more conservative approach, not making any moves to help improve their line-up and sticking to what got them to where they are in the standings, second in the OHL only behind the Knights.

The season points standings show the Knights are on top, although the Whalers lead the season series 2-1, while outscoring London 13-8 in three games. Both teams can score, so it's all going to come down to defence and goaltending. The defence is a split right down the middle. Plymouth has more firepower on the blue line, but the Knights have the size and that may be something that wears down the Plymouth Whalers come playoff time. When it comes to goaltending, it's going to have to go to the Whalers. The Scott Wedgewood-Matt Mahalak combo in net gives the Whalers depth; something London doesn't have. Michael Houser may arguably be the best goalie they've got, but the Knights need a solid back-up. Plymouth has two goalies that could be starters for just about any team in the CHL. Something every championship team needs is two great goalies just in case one of them goes down with an injury.

When it comes to scoring, it's going to be the London Knights with the advantage. They have made trades to pick up talented forwards across the OHL and have made the sacrifice in order to make a championship season this year. The Knights are starting to show signs of chemistry on the forward lines. They had some problems working together just because of a lack of experience, but that is completely expected from a team that mixed up their roster; they have another two months until playoffs are in full swing and look for the Knights' powerplay to carry them through the playoffs.

Both teams will look to set the tone in their last meeting before playoffs and you can expect a great game with a lot of physical play along the boards and both teams trying to stay disciplined by staying out of the penalty box. My prediction: Knights even up the season series at two games each, 4-1 final.
