The path to Super Bowl XL

It is a good thing that I don't buy Pro-Lines.

The predictions that I made at the beginning of the National Football League (NFL) season have turned out to be worthless, and the two teams that I predicted would collide in Super Bowl XL in Detroit on February 4th have been eliminated from the playoffs by the two actual clubs meeting in the NFL's final game.

The Seattle Seahawks' path to Super Bowl XL included a first round bye followed by a 20-10 victory over the Washington Redskins, and a 34-14 thrashing of the favoured Carolina Panthers in the National Football Conference Championship game.

Seattle is led offensively by the current NFL MVP running back Shaun Alexander who enjoyed a record-breaking season. Alexander broke Priest Holmes record for most touchdowns in a season with 28, and also led the entire NFL in rushing yards with 1880.

Defensively, Seattle is led by a talented group of linebackers who have looked impressive during the post season. Leroy Hill, Lofa Tatupu, and D.D. Lewis lead the group and will hope to continue their postseason success during the final game of the season in Detroit.

The Pittsburgh Steelers took to the road for their path into Super Bowl XL.

The Steelers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 31-17, Indianapolis Colts 21-18, and Denver Broncos 34-17 in successive weeks, all as the away team.

Leading the Steelers has been their second year quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who has overcame tedious injuries and played like a seasoned veteran this season for Pittsburgh. Roethlisberger will hand the ball off to Steeler running backs Willie Parker and Jerome Bettis in hopes of them carrying their team to a Super Bowl victory.

Defensively the Steelers have a shining star in strong safety Troy Polamalu. The All-Pro selection Polamalu is all over the field on defence, and has the ability to make a game-breaking play on any given down.

Simply by looking at the manner in which each team earned their trip to play in the NFL's most hallowed contest, the Pittsburgh Steelers look to have the edge after defeating three of the top four seeds in the AFC.

However, Seattle has only played two playoffs games to Pittsburgh's three, and could be more rested and subsequently more energized to play on February 4th.

But with my track record of predictions, I am not going to bother this time. Instead I am going to sit back, enjoy the game with a few brews, and keep insisting that next year will absolutely be the year for Indianapolis Colts.
