As summer is right around the corner, it's time to bring out all the summer apparel, sunscreen and flip-flops. On top of all the necessities, the most important and differentiating addition to your summer wardrobe is sunglasses.

Buying any random pair of sunglasses from the dollar store is more detrimental than not wearing any sunglasses at all. Not only are sunglasses fashionable, they are, of course, good for protection against the sun. When picking out shades, there are a few guidelines to follow.

The main thing to consider (and is most often overlooked) is the shape of your face. Picking out an uncomplimentary pair of sunglasses can really look odd or distort your actual face shape. The following face shapes coordinate with the style of glasses:

The Oval Face is the easiest shape to work with since it has balanced proportions. Pretty much any frame-shape works, but the optimal look would be a frame that is as wide as the broadest part of the face.

The Square Face requires sunglasses with a narrow frame and has more width than depth so it widens the eye area of the face.

The Oblong Face is very long, slim and has straight cheek lines. To offset the narrow face, pick sunglasses that have a deep frame with some kind of ornamentation.

The Round Face needs sunglasses that will thin out the face. To do this, choose ones that have clear bridges (to widen the eyes) and narrow frames (to lengthen the face).

The Triangular Face has a broad forehead and narrow chin which, again, means you need a pair of sunglasses that will be fitting. Thin-rimmed sunglasses that don't sit too high on the face are the best choice for this face shape.

After deciding which sunglasses are going to look the best with your face shape, it's also key to keep in mind of the trends of 2011. Teashade sunglasses (made famous by John Lennon) are probably the most extreme shades we will see in summer 2011 and may be too extreme for most men's looks, but they are definitely a conversation piece. Wayfarers (James Dean's signature glasses) are going to be the hottest pair of sunglasses this summer and compliment pretty much any face shape. Last but not least, aviators are again the trend for the summer, except this year designers are starting to play around with different colours of glass to create a more artistic look.

This summer, try something new; whether it be a new cologne, new pair of sunglasses or a new fling, just try something different. You only live once, and always remember that fashion and style are never set in stone; there are simply guidelines for you to twist and mix in any way you wish.
