Handbook ad has no right

I would like to complain about an advertisement in the 2005/06 Student Handbook for LARLA (the local anti-choice enclave). I went to complain directly to the publishing office, but it turns out that they don't have any complaint policy, so I'm writing a letter for all to see. While I appreciate that the FSU publishing office may have no desire to take a stand on the abortion issue, I find it highly disturbing that they have passively condoned the anti-abortion perspective by printing this ad.

This is my first year as a Fanshawe student (although I have attended other post-secondary institutions), so I can only assume things work differently here. You see, where I come from, free Student Handbooks are used to plan your school schedule, maybe give you some homework and safety tips, tell you not to drink until you vomit; that kind of thing. I guess at Fanshawe, they also serve the handy function of telling women what they ought and ought not do with their own bodies, and that the roughly 80% of us Canadians who are pro-choice are wrong.

I understand that advertising brings in revenue, but at some point you have an obligation to set standards for what you will and will not accept. In my humble opinion, printing this advertisement was unacceptable.

Thanks,
Joshua Bowman
