The Neighbourhood Mechanic: Leak could lead to bigger issues

As cars become more sophisticated, so do the repair methods. Tools have gone high tech. Computers, scan tools, bore scopes, information programs, mechanic chat rooms. As a small shop, we have worked hard in keeping up. We have invested time and lots of money in order to be able to repairs today's car. Looking for a shop to service your ride? Be sure they have the level of investment required to be able to do the job right the first time. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to fix cars. Wait a second, now-a-days it does.

Dear Dave,
My problem is there is water coming into my car when it rains. I think it comes through the trunk area; but I'm not sure. The water fills up the back seat, but only on the passenger side. After a rain fall, water is pooling on the passenger rear floor area. I can't see this as a good thing. Can you give me some advice?

This could become a serious situation. With that much water entering the car you could have serious consequences if not looked after and soon. The moisture will play havoc with the vehicles wiring grounding and computers, not to mention rotting the floor. Look for a shop with proper test equipment to investigate this type of problem, something more than a hose and a flashlight. Modern repair facilities use smoke machines. These devices discharge smoke that is reactive to florescent light. The smoke is directed at suspected areas and will leak out, identifying where the defect is located. I think most good body shops would be equipped with this equipment. By the way, you are right to suspect the trunk area. We see a lot of leakage at the gasket and oddly enough the taillights.
