Getting on top of the hottest trends for winter

Halloween is over and now every retailer in the world is forcing us to focus on Christmas. As winter is creeping up on us quickly, and the cold weather can cause us to become lazier with fashion, - what's the point in concocting a super cute outfit if it's going to be covered up with bulky sweaters and winter coats? - I'm going to do you a favour and summarize the hottest trends for winter 2009 and some great (and inexpensive) fashion ideas to look good while frolicking in the snow or even just walking to class. First are the five staples that I think every girl should have this season.

Rachel Bilson wearing the perfect Fall/Winter 09 outfit: an oversized plaid shirt, scarf, leggings and big boots1. Big boots are number one on my list.
Thigh-high's are back in style. Knee-high are okay too, but like they say, go big or go home. Black boots are better than white for dirt exposure, but salt stains can ruin an outfit and make you want to toss your new $200 suede boots just months after purchasing them. I'd be more inclined to go for a gray pair myself, but brown is great too. Just make sure to take care of your shoes like using shoe care sprays or even a scrub brush and some vinegar to get out the salt stains.

2. Tights, tights, and more tights.
There is a selection of colour and materials, but make sure to have at least one black pair. Ripped tights and leggings are hot this year but not so practical for the cold weather. You could layer these over a solid pair, but I'd recommend going for a plain thick knit pair or even a pair of leather tights to protect your legs against the wind. Either way, they are great to just throw on when you're scrambling to find an outfit and want to be comfy as well. Stores like Claire's and Ardene's are selling them cheaply and have lots of selection from faux acid wash to sequins.

3. Over-sized plaid button-ups.
This is where you can really save money on a cute outfit, browse thrift stores! The men's section too is where you'll find a ton of selection and for $10 or less. Even better, grab one of your dad's (or boyfriend's) for the day and throw them on with those tights and boots!

4. Scarves.
They never really go out of style. Especially in winter (of course) and they will definitely keep you super warm while looking super chic. This is where I would dish out the cash; spend a little more on luxurious soft fabrics and scarves of decent sizes. If it's going to be wrapped around your neck and face you'll want something comfortable, and not itchy. Silk scarves are not practical, and stay away from scarves with long fibres that will blow in the wind and stick to your lip-gloss!

5. The perfect coat.
I could go on forever on choosing the perfect winter coat, but it's pretty simple - choose a style that fits your regular style and looks good on your body type! Cloaks and capes are huge this winter, and can be fun to twirl around in too. I always go for a big hood, preferably fur trimmed too. Grab a coat that has some length to it (past the hips) and make sure it's warm! Coats are another item I'd be more inclined to spend more money on. You'll be seen wearing it most of the season and the more you spend the longer it will last. Go designer if you can afford it, and it will be guaranteed to last at least three years. Some of my favourite high fashion designers to check out for winter coats this year are Yohji Yamamoto (the king of Pea Coats), MaxMara, Julien Macdonald (the psychedelic furs might be a bit much for some) and of course, Prada! Even if you can't afford them, they can be a great inspiration for style, fit and colour when out shopping.
