Falcons flying high after 3-0 victory

The Fanshawe Falcons women's volleyball team continue to be undefeated after a 3-0 victory over the Niagara College Knights.

After seeing Niagara play during a tournament at Humber College, head coach Lloyd Rumble utilized footage from the game to help develop a game plan to better prepare for the Knights.

“We got a lot of game film, and I watched film for five or six hours on Sunday. I broke it down, and we came up with a plan to keep it away from big #9 (Heidi Bench),” Rumble said.

“Then people like Katie Seys, Stephanie Femia, and Nadia Jevnikar, the setter, did an awesome job of executing the game plan.”

Team captain Stephanie Femia said she the team played much better against Niagara in comparison to previous seasons.

“It was so much easier this year compared to last year, but it was difficult in the aspect that we had to stick to the game plan strictly, we didn't really have as much freedom as we usually do,” Femia said.

Playing another near flawless game, libero Karnia Rowell did a fantastic job at passing the ball with proficiency.

“She is awesome,” said Rumble. “We scout and she just understands, and she trusts us and goes with it, and then she is technically very good and she doesn't make a lot of mistakes.”

The Falcons currently have a 4-0 record, and are in first place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) West standings. Femia said the team is getting better week in and week out.

“We are playing ten steps above what we were two weeks ago,” said Femia.

“We've just been improving really quickly as a team and as individuals, so our game is improving quite a bit.”

Femia said that playing as a team and having a solid supporting cast is one of the reasons the team has enjoyed so much success so far this season.

“There isn't one big fish type thing, everybody on the court, everybody on the bench can do the job, and get the job done,” Femia said.

The Falcons will hit the road next to take on Canadore College and the Nippising Lakers on November 18 and 19.
