Fanshawe enrollment sees record numbers

If it seems like the line-up at Tim Hortons is even longer this year — it might not just be in your head. This year has seen record numbers in enrollment for Fanshawe.

Overall, the total number of students is up 10.2 per cent from last year — the highest the college has ever had, confirmed Karrie Burke, communications officer for the college, in an email.

Registrations for level one students are up seven-and-a-half per cent. At the end of August, a six per cent increase was projected, said Cathie Auger, Fanshawe College vice president of student support.

In terms of returning students, the college has seen an increase of 14 per cent.

Auger cites the tough economic situation as a possibility for the increase.

“We often have people returning to school (during these times) so it's not surprising,” she said.

She also noted that the addition of a third residence may have helped with the boost in enrollment as Fanshawe now has the capability of housing 1,200 students on campus.

Paul Masse, business manager of the Fanshawe Student Union, commented on Fanshawe's overall appeal as a college as reason behind the high numbers.

“It's a destination,” he said. “Great rep for programs, top drawer facilities. I think we're doing things right.”
