Letter to the editor
Student Action Movement is a growing student based organization whose mission is to engage young Canadians in the democratic voting process. By establishing voting booths for Federal Elections on every campus of every Canadian College and University we can secure students as an influential force, and one that has an active, not passive, place in today's politics. In addition, we are striving to build a bridge between S.A.M and Ottawa, so that we can fight for student issues and concerns. We are a student-founded organization and here for young Canadians who are ready, willing and able to participate in their democracy. Furthermore, we have actively studied the required steps for carring out our mission in order to ensure a problem free transition into Ottawa. We have put together a action plan that consists of three simple steps:
Step 1: Due to lack of initiative on the part of Elections Canada who have not take the necessary steps to tally the number of students that took part in the Federal Election, S.A.M has decided to conduct a student survey. We are interested in discovering how many students voted in the previous Federal Elections, and how students would feel about campus wide voting booths. Our goal is to successfully complete 1200 student surveys, and thus far we are making excellent progress.
Step 2: After completing and evaluating the 1200 surveys, we will compose a mission statement that will be included in our petition. This petition along with our surveys which outline student issues and concerns will be delivered to Ottawa in the coming months. We are looking to engage 5000 Fanshawe students in this movement who are excited and supportive of our mission. Students also have the option of providing their names, and e-mail addresses so that our organization can notify members on current events and progress.
Step 3: One we have collected all surveys and signed petitions, we will organize a booklet based on our ongoing process and deliver it to Ottawa. Please do not be apathetic about what is going on around you. We are students fighting for students voices to be heard. Recognize the importance of our missions, and join us in promoting this movement to your colleagues.
Student Action Movement will be going around the College for the next two weeks, and making this missions a reality. Our time is NOW. Thank you.
