Designing For The Earth

I am an environmentalist. Or at least I try to be.

Stella McCartney is a designer that I aspire to be more like when considering the environment, as well as doing it fashionably by wearing designs from her collections.

Daughter of Paul McCartney, Stella was famous before she even graduated pre-school. Not one to let her name become famous without demonstrating talent or any kind of achievement, Stella graduated from Central St. Martins and two years later was appointed the Creative Director of Chloe in Paris. Soon after, she launched her own fashion house under her name and was immediately known for her immaculate tailoring and feminine garments. Even more buzzed about was her use of textiles in her collections. A lifelong vegetarian, McCartney does not use fur or leather in her designs and incorporates organic and environmentally friendly materials into each collection.

A pioneer in the green movement, McCartney truly cares for the environment and is clearly not doing it to be a part of the trend.

In addition to a women's ready to wear line, McCartney has also been collaborating with Adidas since 2004. Adidas by Stella McCartney has expanded since its debut given that it's in such high demand, and now the line offers active wear for running, yoga, tennis, swimming, dance, golf and winter wear. She has also been a part of the ever-growing list of high profile designers to pair with H&M, and her collection sold out in record time.

McCartney has expanded her brand over time and has since introduced a line of accessories, eyewear, fragrance and organic skincare. Although all ventures are designed and created with the environment in mind, her skincare line CARE put extra thought into its ingredients, packaging and production to result in leaving the least negative impact possible. The first of its kind in the way of luxury organic skincare, the line was made in collaboration with YSL Beauté and is created with 100 per cent organic active ingredients and took more than three years to develop.

McCartney continues to create high profile collections that stars and fashion lovers alike gobble up like it's a basket of organic sweet potato fries. Simple yet well fitting casual wear, sharp tailored suits, interesting but not fussy dresses and sleek accessories keep this designer's collections on the most wanted list season after season. With all of her success comes generosity and a still-strong environmentally friendly morale: McCartney works alongside and donates to a number of charities including PETA, Marine Connection, Children's Action Network, Peace One Day, The Humane Society, Fauna & Flora International and Adventure Ecology.

Her ever-expanding brand continues to open stores in fashion capitals around the world. I only hope a shop in Toronto will open in the near future so I can do my part to help the environment and get my hands on some of her garments.
