X-Country runs towards a medal

The OCAA Cross Country Championships were held October 29 at Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area in Kingston, ON as St.Lawrence College hosted 169 competitors.

In the men's competition our own Fanshawe Falcons finished first, taking home the gold as a team in the 8-kilometer run. The top four scorers consisted of Jon Mason who placed 2nd overall, Andrew Galloway, Chris Novakowski, and Casey Kulchycki.

Mason will also be representing Fanshawe as a member of the OCAA men's conference team. The men's team worked together to come ahead for the first time this season against rivals Fleming Knights.

On the Women's side, the Falcons finished 9th place overall in the 5-kilometer run. The top three scorers were Shannyn Clancy finishing 10th place, Samara Cahais finishing 17th place, and Jessica Bober with an impressive finish for her very first cross country race of the season. The women ran as well as they could, but faced a disadvantage because there are only three runners on the women's team.

From this experience it is apparent that the Fanshawe cross country team is looking to increase the number of women on the team for next season. Thanks in part to the expert coaching from head coach John Loney, women at Fanshawe who join the team have some great benefits that really pay off, including the chance to win championships and awards. Team members are also eligibile to win bursaries and scholarships, and being part of a team looks great on a resume!

Hopefully an increase in participation will be the next big step next season. As for the rest of this season, the team is preparing for the CCAA championship hosted by Fleming College in Peterborough, ON from November 11-12, 2005.
