Sharing Shop hosts open house

On its 11th Anniversary, Wednesday, February 25, students and staff are encouraged to visit the Sharing Shop to find out what it is all about and what the Shop has to offer. Donations will be accepted during the Open House; however, it is not mandatory and everyone is welcome.

Fanshawe College opened the doors of Sharing Shop officially on Wednesday, February 25, 1998. Bill Aarts, former Counselling and Student Life Manager, was the driving force in making the Sharing Shop a reality and there is a dedication plaque located on the Shop wall.

However, it was one student's idea that got the ball rolling. At a Student Council meeting, Jamie Stevenson brought up the idea of a Food Bank for Fanshawe College students. His idea, with the cooperation of the Student Union and the College, has endured for the past 11 years.

Over the years the Sharing Shop has been able to help many Fanshawe students in need. With donations of clothing, food, textbooks, and other items, students who are struggling financially have been able to obtain items needed for campus life free of charge.

Being a student can be very difficult; the cost of tuition, the cost of books and everyday essentials can eat up a large amount of a studen's budget. On top of that there are rent, clothing and food expenses. It is no wonder there are many students struggling financially.

The Sharing Shop exists to support students who are unable to afford the everyday essentials of student life. School is stressful enough without wondering where the extra money will come from when a dire need exists. Being able to obtain items confidentially and free of charge enriches the lives of many students.

Items available depend on donations. The Shop encourages students to donate their last semester's textbook to help others entering the same courses. Clean clothing is accepted in all sizes from shirts to pants to outerwear. Toiletries and food are always needed and recently a refrigerator was donated by Pearson Publishing, enabling donations of perishable food items as well.

Monetary donations are always appreciated. Donations are accepted throughout the campus in rooms F2010 Student Success Centre, D3025 Human Services Office, SC2001 Fanshawe Student Union and, A2003 Language and Liberal Studies. Donations are also accepted at the Sharing Shop located in B1050.

The Sharing Shop is run by student volunteers and is supported by faculty, staff and administration. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed.

If you have an hour to spare, or more, and want to contribute your time, please contact Janet Ostrom, Student Life Coordinator in F2010, or at jostrom@fanshawec.ca.

The Fanshawe College Sharing Shop looks forward to seeing you during its Open House on Wednesday, February 24, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.
