And the winners should be...

The Academy Awards or “Oscars”, airing Sunday February 22nd at 8 pm on CTV, is an event movie lovers always look forward to.

Not only for the thrill of seeing your favourite new movie win awards, but also to see what the actors are wearing and the strangely spectacular speeches made. In previous years great movies such as Crash, The Departed and No Country for Old Men have won for Best Picture.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, Forest Whitaker and Daniel Day-Lewis have been among the greats to win for Best Actor in a leading role, and Reese Witherspoon, Helen Mirren and Marion Cotillard for Best Actress.

In supporting roles; George Clooney, Alan Arkin, and Javier Bardem, as well as Rachel Weisz, Jennifer Hudson and Tilda Swinton have made their mark in film history.

Along with the winners of the Academy Awards themselves, some actors win for what they wear, or what they shouldn't have.

Last year's best dressers were Katherine Heigl and Jennifer Garner, who both stole the show by looking elegant and classic, but Tilda Swinton takes the cake for one of the worst dressed ever.

To add to the amusement of fashion, no one will ever forget Cube Gooding Jr.'s acceptance speech in 1997 (“I love everyone”) or Gwyneth Paltrow's speech in 1999 (sobbing).

As for this year, there are a wide variety of films being nominated, from big money makers to unexpected fan favourites. Some of this year's nominations are as follows and I highlighted the ones I think should win, not necessarily the ones I think will win, because everyone knows only certain types of films win and actors for them; dramas and melodramas.

Let's hope for a good show, where great movies win and horrible actors commit fashion suicide. Lights, camera ... action.
