Income Tax Forms

Income Tax time will be here soon! The Office of the Registrar will distribute the 2008 tax forms called T2202As, only through your WebAdvisor account, by February 28, 2009.

What is a T2202A?

It's the income tax form that shows the eligible amount of tuition and the number of months of attendance that a student is eligible to claim against their Income Tax assessment.

T2202A forms are issued to students who paid $100 or more in eligible tuition fees for courses offered in 2008. According to the Income Tax Act, students may not combine receipts from institutions to meet the minimum eligible fee.

F.A.T.SWhat's the difference between a T2202A and a T4A?

T2202A shows the amount of tuition you can deduct for income tax purposes, as well as the number of months eligible for the education deduction and the textbook deduction in the calendar year.

T4A shows the amount of money you received through scholarships, bursaries and other monetary awards from Fanshawe College in the calendar year, even if the money came from another organization. Amounts on T4As must be reported as Other Income on your tax return. We'll send your T4A for 2008 to you in the mail by the end of February if your correct address is in our records.

How do I get my T2202A?

T2202As for 2008 will be available on WebAdvisor by the end of February 2009. T2202As for 2007 are there now. You'll need your username and password. If you don't remember your password, use “What's my password?” If you still have problems, call Connect Resource Centre, E2030, 519.452.4478.

I need a printed T2202A.

Print your T2202A from WebAdvisor, if you have a printer attached to your computer. The form is in Acrobat (.pdf) format. You don't need a printed copy for your income tax.

My parents/ my accountants/ my sponsors want my T2202A. Will you mail it, or fax it, or email it for me?

No. But if you want a paper copy to give them, you can print it from WebAdvisor.

I don't have a computer.

You can get Internet and print access at the following locations:

At Fanshawe:
Falcon Lab Room F1000 or Library L1003, second floor: available seven days a week and open access until 4 pm. After 4 pm you need an active student card for entry. You can see your T2202A on the lobby computers of the Office of the Registrar (E1012) but you can't print a copy.

At a public library:
You'll need a library card which is available on request at London public libraries if you're a London resident. Be prepared to show ID with an address or bring an envelope showing you receive mail in London. London and St. Thomas public libraries have computers with access to the internet and a recent version of Adobe to view and print the forms. Nominal printing fees apply. You don't need a printed copy of your T2202A to file your taxes.

Do I qualify for a T2202A?
Only if you paid more than $100 in eligible fees for post-secondary level courses beginning and ending in a particular calendar year. Please refer to the Canada Revenue Agency's website at www.cra-arc.gc.ca, click Individuals, then Students for further information about eligible fees.

I paid over $100 for my course but there isn't a T2202A on WebAdvisor, or, the amount showing is less than I paid.

Some courses and fees aren't eligible. For example, the student activity fee, the bus pass fee, and general interest, preparatory, and driver's education courses aren't eligible. See the Canada Revenue Agency's website at www.cra-arc.gc.ca; click on Individuals, then Students. As well, if your courses ran over two calendar years, only the amount relating to 2008 can be reported in 2008.

I paid for my Winter 2009 term during 2008. Will that amount show on my 2008 T2202A?
No. The T2202A only reflects the learning period that you were registered during the taxation year.

I printed my T2202A form but my address changed. Do I need a new one?

No. You don't attach the T2202A to your tax forms and the address doesn't have to match. BUT make sure your address is current with the Office of the Registrar! Use WebAdvisor at www.fanshawe.ca/students/webservices.asp.

I need a T2202A for a previous year.

T2202As for 2007, 2006 and 2005 are on WebAdvisor now. You can get replacement forms for 2000 to 2004 by filling out a form at the Office of the Registrar, or mailing or faxing a request saying what form you need, with your full name, student number, signature, and if it is an amendment. Our fax number is 519.453.5021. This request takes five business days.

Who do I call if I still have questions?
