Carrey is back and this critic says “yes”

Yes Man

Jim Carrey goes back to the comedy that made him famous, and produces a hilariously enjoyable film in Yes Man.

Carl Allen (Jim Carrey) is an extremely pessimistic man, who is divorced and stuck in a job he hates. All Carl wants to do with his spare time is stay at home and watch movies. He even lies to his best friend, Peter (Bradley Cooper), to get out of doing things. That is until he misses his friend's engagement party and risks losing Peter as a friend forever. He takes the advice of an old friend, Nick (John Michael Higgins), and goes to a seminar to help people become positive. The seminar tries to teach people to say “yes” to life, but Carl takes the message more literally and decides to say “yes” to everything.

Carl starts off on his new way of life immediately after leaving the seminar, however saying “yes” seems to have gotten him stranded in the middle of nowhere with no gas, no money and a powerless cellphone. Thinking he has made a huge mistake, Carl almost resorts to his old ways, until he meets a quirky, free-spirited musician, Allison (Zooey Deschanel), who proves that saying “yes” to things can lead you down new and exciting paths.

Carl is now on a journey of self-discovery, hoping that his new outlook on life and favourite three-letter word will make his work, friendships, and even love life better.

Yes Man was awesome. It was funny, surprising and classic Jim Carrey comedy, combining comedic lines with his expressive nature. I went into the movie knowing that it would be funny, I just didn't realize how funny it would be and it actually has a good storyline to go along with all the laughs.

Carrey (Horton Hears a Who) hasn't been in a true comedy since his 2003 hit Bruce Almighty. One thing is for sure he hasn't lost his ability to captivate an audience with his comedic delivery and charm.

Zooey Deschanel (The Happening) was amazing. She is just so cute, quirky and talented. I wish she were in more movies. The supporting cast, Bradley Cooper (Failure to Launch), John Michael Higgins (Fred Claus) and Rhys Darby (“Flight of the Conchords”), were all very funny and helped to add depth to the film, especially Darby. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes to laugh.

Final Words: Saw it. Loved it. Any movie that starts off with a Journey song is a winner in my book.
