As part of my role as VP of External & Academic Affairs, I attend a CSA conference every few months. The last one was in October in Windsor and the next one will not be until February in Kitchener. The purpose of these conferences is so that members of student unions from all over Ontario can get together to learn about issues that affect college and college/university students. It also provides student leaders with the opportunity to learn about other colleges in Ontario. (One thing I can say about Fanshawe verses other colleges is that we have the best food!)

When you learn about other colleges and talk to their student leaders you can learn from each other and exchange ideas on how to make your own campus better.

At the last conference, we attended seminars about the economy, a looming recession, and an estimated labour shortage. I understand that sounds incredibly boring to most students. Boring as it may sound; it will affect each and every one of us. The Conference Board of Canada forecasts that Ontario will be short 360,000 workers by 2025. A labor shortage plus thousands of jobs in the manufacturing sector lost, plus the baby boomers are nearing retirement, equals more challenges to our already suffering economy.

Unless Ontario finds solutions to these challenges, we are all screwed. The CSA has been advocating on behalf of Ontario college students to receive more funding for post-secondary institutions. Post secondary education needs to be accessible and affordable. With the loss of so many jobs, the CSA wants to ensure that Ontario college and college/university students can obtain the proper education so that the jobs that have not been lost will have a sufficient amount of skilled workers.
