There's something about the whimsical world of vintage that excites me. Maybe it's the thrill of digging up a unique garment and putting my own modern twist on it. Or perhaps it's the fun of imagining how it was worn during its era of popularity that excites me.

Incorporating some funky vintage pieces into your contemporary outfit is a sure way to create a one of a kind ensemble. I'll let you in on a few easy tricks you can use while vintage shopping that'll help you find the perfect piece that suits your individual style.

Many people like vintage, but don't think they can pull it off. Pulling it off is the easiest part. The key rule you must follow is to revamp it, don't relive it. For example, maybe you found a great 1960's sheath dress a size too big. By adding a current waist-cinching belt and rolling the sleeves, you'll give the nostalgic dress a contemporary twist. Wear it with a pair of flats for a daytime look and pumps for an evening look.

Perhaps your issue is staying on track. Due to the nature of vintage and consignment stores the volume of stock they carry can be overwhelming and leave you frustrated. My suggestion is to plan ahead and shop for one item at a time. If you're looking for a retro biker jacket, then head straight to the jacket section. Don't allow yourself to sort through the sweater and dress runs.

Thrift stores, yard sales and even your grandmother's closet are great places to source out retro accessories. Patterned silk scarves scream sensuality and work as a great accent piece. Tie it around your neck to complete a new outfit. Add some excitement to your getup by knotting a scarf around the strap of your favourite handbag. Waist cinching belts are also a great fashion accessory from the past; they're easily found in abundance at any vintage store. Pair a retro belt with a loose fitting dress to define your waistline and add some curve to your silhouette.

Handbags are a smart alternative for those who can't quite get past the previously worn aspect of vintage. While thrifting, search for bags with unique hardware, dramatic colours, exciting fabrics and unusual detailing for a statement making piece. Clutches are a timeless classic that work great with casual daytime wear as well as with elegant eveningwear.

Another style to keep your eye open for are ‘70s swing bags; they're making a big comeback this year and are easy thrift store finds. Make sure to closely inspect the bag for scuffed leather, stains, missing embellishments and broken clasps before purchasing.
