RE: Opinion piece “Is policing the solution to problems?” by Darius Mirshahi published September 22, 2008, Volume 41 Issue No.7

I grabbed a copy of “Interrobang” to read to kill some time before class and came across the article “Is policing the solution to the problems?”

How does an article like this get published? I'm going to highlight some of my favourite quotes from this oh so enlightening article.

“There's a lot of talk lately about the “so called” out of control behaviour of Fanshawe students in the student ghetto.”

Student ghetto? Is that located in south central London? Does Snoop Dog buy weed from there? Just curious.

“Every time I see a police officer, I want to approach them and demand to know why they've chosen to make a career out of repressing me and other citizens. I want to know how they feel about being used as pawns to protect the wealth and power of the rich.”

Is he serious? Does he think there is a secret chamber of rich people who giggle and high five every time a drunk douche bag gets fined?

I think it's clear the author of this article just watched “zeitgeist” and was desperate to find his own cause.

The article states no solution, other then to not communicate with police and to not call Crimestoppers, or the “snitch line,” as he refers to it. Since the author is the “social justice club president” and he criticizes Fanshawe's President, I'd like to know what he's doing about the issues? Actually, since he suggests not co-operating with police, I'm curious to know what people should do if there property gets vandalized? If they get raped or assaulted at a party? Don't go to the police, just email the social justice president, I'm sure he'll fix it right up for you.

It seems like his article is aimed at criminals who want to evade getting caught and suffering a consequence. He talks of “oppression,” what about the people who live in the area of the “student ghetto” who have young kids and have to get up for work? Are they to suffer through a night of partying and Eminem/Nickleback tracks so that partying students don't get oppressed? Are they supposed to get out of bed and head to a house full of hundreds of people and go “hey everybody, can you keep it down?”

The next time Martin Luther Bling donates one of his riveting articles to your paper, can you read it before you publish it? It's obvious that the guy uses a Rage Against the Machine lyric sheet instead of a dictionary, dramatizing his article with “corporate media”, “oppression” “pawns”. It's bullshit on parade:)

He lists his “tips for dealing with police and staying free” and it takes up a quarter of his article when really he could have condensed it down to a simple sentence: “Don't be an idiot.” That would have saved on paper and ink.

Garbage is food for feeble minds and the “Is policing the solution to problems?” article is pure 100 per cent trash.

Thanks for your time.
Daniel
