Fanshawe opens season with five set win against Mohawk

Despite a scare, the Fanshawe women's volleyball team clung on to a five set victory over the Mohawk Mountaineers.

The Falcon's won in their first regular season game of the season by scores of 25-21, 25-20, (22-25), (24-26), and 15-10. Despite dropping the third and fourth sets, head coach Lloyd Rumble was not concerned and remained optimistic.

Stephanie Fernia“I said to the team not to panic going into the fifth set,” said Rumble. “We're a better team then them and if we just minimize some of these careless mistakes, then we should win. We did that, and I'm very pleased.”

Shining for the Falcons was first year middle, Katie Seys. Seys dominated at the net, producing several kills and blocks throughout the contest.

“Katie Seys was unstoppable,” said Rumble.

Seys said nerves played a role with the team but she thought the chemistry between them was still sufficient.

“We're still working with our setters I guess, so sometimes its right there and we're on with each other and I can hit the way I like to and other times I need to learn how to hit smarter shots,” Seys said.
Team captain Stephanie Femia also said that nerves were getting to some of the younger players.

“Everyone was falling apart and some of the players let everything get to them, but we still knew we would win,” said Femia.

Also standing out for the Falcons and making several key plays was the libero Karina Rowell.

“Our libero played unbelievable. Some of the digs she made were phenomenal and that's why she was an Ontario All-star two years ago,” said Rumble.

The Fanshawe women will take on a team of Fanshawe alumni on October 22nd at 12:00 p.m. during Fanshawe's homecoming festivities.
