These aren't your mom's jeans

Tuck your low waist skinnies in the back of your closet; the ‘70s jeans are making a bold comeback!

It's all about embracing your womanly curves by emphasizing the natural waistline, lengthening the leg and giving the illusion of a leaner silhouette. Though you may think it's a thing of the past, designers are taking a more modern approach on this Charlie's Angles trademark by fitting the pants loose from the thigh straight to the floor. This fit is very flattering on every body type, unlike its predecessor; the skinny jean.

I know the first image that comes to mind is the typical soccer mom dressed in outdated, waist clinching, bottom elongating, faded denims; these current waist hugging pants better resemble a funky corset. Trendy detailing you can spot on these new denims are set in pleats, sailor-style buttons, different varieties of patch and flap pockets, loose gathers, thick waistbands and belts. Aside from denim, breezy cottons and linen textiles are also popular for this look. Designers who have captured these high-waisted must-haves in their spring collections include Thankoon, whose jeans included a gathered waist band accented with a belt, Yigal Azrouel embellished his gray washed denims with buttons lining the hip pockets and a waist cinching belt, while DKNY embraced the flat front pockets and classic indigo wash.

If you have wider set hips, look for high-waist jeans with detailing in the front, such as sailor buttons and pockets, which will break up the width of your hips. If you have a generous bottom, opt for high-waist jeans with a thick waistband or a belt, this will help to cut the length of your rear in half. Also, avoid excessive detailing on the backside. For women who have a slender, boyish figure, any style of these jeans will flatter your form and create a more curvaceous, hourglass shape to your body. As the warmer weather quickly approaches and stores release their summer lines, you'll start to see this high-waist variety available in shorts as well as skirts.

After a lengthy process of elimination I have found the ultimate pair of retro trousers for a pretty inexpensive price. These Free People high-waist sailor jeans, pictured on the right, ($198.00) house the classic sailor buttons down the front, flat side pockets as well as a centre front seam down the leg. The loose fit starting at the mid thigh creates a perfect a-line shape down to the foot creating that desired lengthened look. I also like the light wash of these jeans; it gives them a casual laidback look, which is what this ‘70s inspired season is all about.

In keeping with the 1970's feel, these skyscraper denims look great with a pair of summary wedge sandals for a casual daytime look. If you're after a posh evening out on the town look, then choose a pair of metallic pumps close or peep toe. I suggest checking out stores such as Town Shoes and Jas (on Richmond Row).

Get ahead of the crowd and take your wardrobe to new heights with a pair of these super feminine jeans. I guarantee this style will be the new skinny jean to hit the stores this fall!
