There is a growing understanding that harm is caused to many people from exposure to scented products.  Many students and staff within Fanshawe College are sensitive to scented products and these products make them sick. Scents are included in a vary large range of products including, shampoos, hairsprays, deodorants, colognes & aftershaves, fragrances & perfumes, lotions & creams, industrial and household chemicals. It is also very common for people to have reactions to other substances such as building materials (paints), engine exhausts and cigarette smoke.

In response to this health risk, Fanshawe College has launched a promotional poster campaign to increase awareness about the health effects associated with scented products.

When scented products can be blamed for some or all of the following symptoms; headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, upper respiratory symptoms, shortness of breath, skin irritation, or anxiety. Allergic and asthmatic patients report that certain odours can trigger an attack. Some people report mild irritation while others are “incapacitated” and/or may have to give up many normal activities in order to avoid exposure (such as going to public places).

Reconsider the use of personal care products that are scented while studying, working or enjoying College Facilities. Please be considerate and refrain from using scented products. If you have any further questions about Scent Sensitivities, please contact Environmental Health and Safety Services in Room D1021.
