Superheroes come alive in Marvel game

Although this game was released a couple of months ago, I never got to play it. I looked at it and even though I liked the characters in the game, I didn't think the game-play would be any good. I was wrong, so I'm going to put my two cents in about this game.

On a side note, before I start, the Bioshock review is coming soon and I'm right into Halo 3...too good, people!

Most times, if there's a game that's coming out for both systems, I usually get it on the Xbox 360 (unless it's lent to me). I do that because I find that the achievements that you can unlock for your gamer score tend to keep me trekking through even the most painful games (I'm looking at you Rainbow Six Vegas). Because I got this game free with my PS3, I didn't have the choice and like I said before, I didn't think this game would be any fun.

You start off the game with this awesome CG intro featuring Iron Man, Spidey, Captain America, Thor and more. As soon as the intro sucks you in, you're right in the heat of the battle and you learn the controls pretty damn quick.

You control one of four superheroes and at any time, you can switch to any member on your team. Each member has a jump, two attacking buttons and one button that is assigned to one-eight super powers. This is really cool because not only can you power up your superheroes, but you can also power up and focus on the powers that you think will be the best for getting you through the game and it's many bad guys.

It seems like almost every character in the Marvel Universe is represented in this game. All the major villains are here and you can unlock about 30 different heroes to play with. This makes every game different and no two gamers will play this game the same. I'm not going to mention the vast amount of characters in this game because that would fill up at least half the page.

The story is broken up into chapters and the plot follows our Marvel Heroes trying to track down the maniacal Dr. Doom who is trying (once again) to become the most powerful man in the universe. That's all I'll say about the plot because although the punch/kick game play does sometimes get repetitive, the story is actually the driving force of the game.

The cool bonus that comes within the game is all these mini scenarios in which you can play out origin (or post origin) stories of the majority of the Marvel heroes (and villains) in this game. It's disappointing that there are so many little hidden discs that you need to collect to unlock these scenarios (and other characters), but I guess they wanted even more reasons for you to go back to the levels you've already visited.

Once again, I didn't have any expectations for this game and it turned out to be a really good time. If you have a 360, I'm sure you can find it new and used for a reasonable price. If you like beat-em-ups, this is a good one.
