Around the Ring: New WWE champ crowned

Something amazing happened! I'm not starting off the column this week with negative thoughts! WWE actually delivered a half decent PPV in the form of “No Mercy.” I didn't buy the PPV but saw it live and I have to say that with a couple beers and low expectations, the PPV satisfied me. The whole handing over of the title to Randy Orton really bugged me and I wasn't that surprised what Vince put Triple H through. What did surprise me was how the whole night turned out. Triple H wins the championship from Orton, then faces Umaga in a title match and then loses the belt back to Orton in a falls count anywhere match at the end of the show. I thought that this pace worked throughout the PPV, although it did give the show a “major” Monday Night Raw feel. It's weird to see on the WWE website that HHH isn't even a choice for fans to vote for at the next PPV.

Cyber Sunday's opponents for Orton are HBK, Mr. Kennedy and Jeff Hardy. We know that no matter what the fans vote for, WWE is going to pit Orton against HBK. I was surprised to see him back on Raw so soon, but I guess when your number one merchandise guy is out with an injury, you have to do what you can to keep the fans watching. I don't mind most HBK matches because they're usually worth the PPV money, but I can't stand the man himself. His return is great for matches, bad for TV spots. Ugh...I hope DX doesn't reunite again.

While the majority of Raw was below average (especially with Lillian singing her new song in Spanish), the Kennedy/Hardy match was amazing. THIS is what they should be giving us each and every week and topping this for PPV's!

The two hour TNA debut was ok. It didn't have the bang that I wanted, or the high caliber matches that it should have had to suck in the naysayers or casual viewers. The show still seemed rushed and although they were trying to get more of their stars out, the matches seemed too cluttered and random. You're also telling me that Kurt Angle couldn't have appeared in the arena for the show? Give me a break!

Bound for Glory looks to be decent, like I said last week and hopefully Sting will win the belt and knock Angle off of the top spot for a bit. I also hope that Team 3D beats the snot out of the Steiners. Can anyone tell me why people want to watch the Steiners?

I'm closing this column this week by saying that I'm just as disappointed that Y2J didn't show up at the PPV and that we didn't get to see what this whole “Second Coming” stuff is about. It seemed like they were teasing it to get people to watch the PPV to see what it was all about. I guess they'll soak it until close to the Survivor Series. I just hope that it wasn't pertaining to HBK.
