Orientating yourself with Orientation

New teachers, new roommates, new friends and, most importantly, new experiences. These are just some of the things you will be treated to during your first few weeks here at Fanshawe College.

There is no doubt that you have entered a new and exciting phase in your life by choosing to complete post-secondary education, and this will never be as apparent to you as during your first few weeks of school. To add to the excitement of moving away from home, meeting new people and trying new things, Fanshawe has developed a great orientation program for first-year students. The 2007 program is called “What the Frosh,” and is packed with fun events for frosh of all ages.

This year is filled with exciting on campus activities, including a Paranormal Show, Shinerama Day, Orlando Valencia and the Pachanga Latin Band, as well as a Mobile concert. These are just a few examples of this year's events, and there is definitely something for everyone. For a complete list of events and more information, visit the Fanshawe Student Union's website at www.fsu.on.ca, and click on the link for Orientation 2007.

In addition to attending the on-campus activities at Fanshawe, why not check out all the fun things to do in London? London has many great restaurants, malls, parks and festivals, and the weather in September is still perfect for both indoor and outdoor activities. The FSU bus pass will get you almost anywhere you need to go in the city, and all full-time students will receive one during orientation. I recommend checking out Richmond Row for great shopping and restaurants and Gibbons Park for a nice walking / biking trail. There are always lots of festivals in Victoria Park and at the Covent Garden Market, which are almost always free.

London bars also have plenty of all-ages concerts, which are usually advertised around the city. Be sure to check out posters around campus and downtown during orientation, as there are always lots of events around London during this time.

Orientation is a very special time in your student career, and I cannot encourage you enough to attend as many events and meet as many people as possible. Even if you do not have anyone to go to an event with, be sure to go alone. This is the perfect way to meet new friends, some of which you will remain friends with for life. During your first few weeks of school, the course load is relatively light, which provides you with an excellent opportunity to make friends and have fun.

I am a veteran of both the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College orientation programs and I will never forget either of them. Graduation may seem far away during your first few weeks of school at Fanshawe, but the time really does go quickly, and when you look back on your experiences here, you will always have many great memories of orientation.

Remember, your first orientation is a special time in your life that you will always remember. Take full advantage of it, and build yourself a foundation for a great few years here at Fanshawe. Good luck with your studies and welcome to Fanshawe College.
