What Scholarships and Bursaries can offer you

A little extra cash here and there never hurt any struggling student. With the endless payments and bills thrown your way during the semester, students are always looking to get their hands on couple of extra dollars. Rather than going to mommy and daddy for some chump change, The Financial Aid Office is here to guide you through the bursary and scholarship application process.

Scholarships and Bursaries are available to students of all avenues during their post-secondary education. For those who excel academically, are involved with Fanshawe College, volunteer in and around the London community or have experienced and overcome obstacles in order to obtain your certificate or diploma, Fanshawe College offers a wide variety of options in order to receive additional assistance.

Bursaries
Bursaries are obtained through the government and dispersed to students attending a post-secondary institutions who have demonstrated a need for financial assistance while contributing to their educational institution.

Community Service Bursary
While performing volunteer services within London and surrounding area, returning, full-time students are eligible for this bursary based on financial needs while attending school.

Fanshawe College Student Assistance Bursary
Assistance is available to students who demonstrate financial needs while attending full-time post-secondary education programs. Educational and personal expenses are taken into consideration.

Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) Bursary
Students must apply and be qualified to receive fund through OSAP before submitting forms for OSAP bursaries

Bursary For Students with Disabilities
Provides assistance to those with disabilities who require funding for educational related disabilities such as learning assessments, special equipment etc.

Child Care Bursary
Students who are married with children or are the sole support for three or more children while attending post-secondary education are eligible

Ontario Special Bursary Program
Assists students who are taking on less than a 60 per cent course load or part-time hours, have no prior post-secondary attendance and are working towards obtaining their first degree, diploma or training program certificate. This bursary will contribute in the assistance of fees such as tuition, books, transportation and family care provided that the student submits documentation supporting why they are attending school on a part-time basis only

Part-Time Studies and Continuing Education Bursary
Administered by Financial Aid, is available to those who are attending post-secondary classes on a part-time basis or are participating in continuing education programs. Applicants must show they have low family income and are pursuing their first diploma or certificate. Based on family income, first come first serve basis and must be a permanent resident of Canada who is deemed ineligible for any other government financial assistance.

Scholarships
Scholarships are another source of funding for students who are in need of assistance during the school year. Students, who excel in specific educational, athletic or display personal excellence, qualify for a number of scholarships, which assist students with tuition in order to complete their education. They offered through colleges and universities nation-wide.

Canada Millennium Scholarship
Students who obtain leadership qualities and wishes to make the world a better place qualify for this scholarship. Up to $10,000 is available to students who are in their first year of a diploma program or second year of an applied degree program and are a permanent resident of Canada are eligible. Garfield Weston Merit Scholarship for Colleges
Includes all students who are looking at completing a two to three year diploma program within a community college. Successful applicants must posses' leadership qualities and an interest in contributing to their community

Additional national scholarships can be found online at www.studentawards.com. Student Awards are available to students in a number of different categories from first-year, program specific and post-secondary wide awards all of which include specific requirements for qualification.

Tuition Set Aside Fund
In 1997 a decision was made that required colleges to maintain 30 per cent of additional income from tuition increases for student financial aid.

This fund allows institutions to hire on students during the summer, fall and winter semesters on a work-term. They apply for positions on-campus and work full-time or part-time in order to supply them with financial assistance while they complete their study term.

According to the Fanshawe College Financial Aid Department, “Over 45 per cent of college students in Ontario depend on financial assistance from the government through OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program). Many others also rely on financial assistance through other sources such as bank loans, academic scholarships, and parental support.”
