Motoring: Crank up the tunes in this Lincoln
There are cars that are targeted towards the guys, and there are cars targeted towards to gals. So the question is, is the new cross-over from Lincoln, the 2007 MKX, gender specific or will both sexes find it appealing.
Well I certainly find its looks appealing. This is one good looking vehicle. It is so good looking in fact, I got compliments from strangers on it. However, I do think its sister vehicle the Ford Edge is better looking.
The interior is hard to fault. It is a very pleasant place to be in, and when equipped with all the gadgets, like my tester, you got all the toys you would wish for, including a good navigation system and the largest sunroof I had ever seen.
It even had brilliant heated seats, which also have a cooling feature for those hot summer days. My favourite feature has to be the THX sound system, it really makes you feel like you are in a theater. It's just brilliant. I'd buy an MKX just for the stereo alone, it is that good.
Everything is good in here too with logically placed items, and there is lots of room for people front and back. The trunk also can swallow a lot of shopping, so ladies with a shopping habit, you'll like this one.
You will also like the driving position, as all the window lines are straight and make it easy for you to look around and check for blind spots. The only angle I didn't like was the position of the A-pillar, it would hide curbs as you make left turns. I was forever ducking and leaning to see the corners during left turns.
So far so good, but what about the performance?
On paper it looks good. It has a 3.5-litre, V6 that produces 265 hp. That is mated with a good six-speed automatic transmission, which shifts very well. However, don't whatever you do, pick the all-wheel drive (AWD) model. The AWD system is noisy and not very smooth, plus it totally kills the fuel economy. This is a thirsty vehicle, I averaged 16-litres/100 km, which is just simply awful. Buy the front drive version, trust me it'll be better.
I also wish the ride quality was better. Sure the ride is not harsh, but it isn't what I call a Lincoln ride. You see, Lincoln is like Lexus, you expect certain ride attributes when you jump in either of them. The MKX rides like any run of the mill Ford, thus lacks the aura you expect from Lincoln's.
On top of all that, it sure is priced like a Lincoln, despite being almost identical to the Ford Edge, it is nearly $10,000 more dearer fully loaded up, with the same equipment, so you really are paying for the badge.
So base price is $42,400 and fully loaded you are at $53,000.
That is a lot of money, and it is a decent vehicle, but I just don't think it is as good as the Acura RDX. However, if you are into big shopping and want a vehicle with a great sound system, this is what you need.
