Women's volleyball team ready to strike

Expectations reach as high as the net for Falcons volleyball.

The Fanshawe women's volleyball team will look to utilize their mix of young and experienced talent to produce a winning program. Head coach Lloyd Rumble feels this year's squad is the best Fanshawe has had in the programs four years of existence.

Volleyball“We probably have the best recruiting class since we started the program,” said Rumble.

“When I look a the province in terms of kids that are going to college and not university, I think we have two of the top three recruits.”

Rumble is referring to London native Katie Seys, and Stratford native Amy Smith. Both of these players along with Amanda Barchuk will lead the freshman class for Fanshawe.

The Falcons will have some returning players who will play vital roles and make a significant impact as well. Last season's Rookie of the Year, Stephanie Femia will be counted on for a leadership role, and Nadia Jevnikar will handle the setting duties.

“I feel really good about our team,” said Rumble.
“We have to stay healthy and because of our inexperience, we have to give them some time to learn what it's all about.”

Rumble said he is impressed with how fast the team is gelling together on the court but says the rookies need to adjust to the higher level of college volleyball.

“It's such a big step from high school to college,” said Rumble.

“Some of the schools are tough to play at, they will pack the gym and it's very loud, so a lot of them will not be used to that.”

Rumble has high expectations for this year's club, and said Niagara will provide them with their toughest competition.

“Our goal is to win our division, and be a medallist at the Ontario championships,” Rumble said.

“If we earn a trip to the nationals, then we will look at that when the time comes.”

The Falcons will begin their quest for a provincial championship, when the women host the Fanshawe College Kick-Off tournament on October 1st and 2nd. Fanshawe will open the regular season on October 6th at Redeemer, and will host Mohawk on October 19th.
