New building gets big boost

Up to 1000 Fanshawe students will have a new home in September thanks to a $5 million investment from the Ontario Government.

The Centre for Industrial Skilled Trades, located just down the street from Fanshawe's main campus at 1765 Oxford St. E, will begin classes next semester and house new skilled trade programs, as well as already established programs.

“Fanshawe College must make investments in its future, so that it can be innovative in the education it provides and, ultimately, have an increasingly positive impact on our local economy and that of the province,” said Senior Vice President Academic, Joy Warkentin.

Fanshawe bought the Small Business Centre in 2006 for just over a $1million and are now renovating the aging building to hold classrooms, labs and special aviation — related training facilities.

According to London-Fanshawe MPP Khalil Ramal, who made the $5 million announcement last Wednesday at the Centre, the facility will be a key for local aviation producer Diamond Aircraft. Just last month the Ontario Government invested just under $1 million in the company, which will create 500 new jobs in relation to the development of the new D- JET personal aircraft.

Local MPP Deb Matthews also stressed that the new building will also be used for research.

“This is not only a place where students will learn… but we see this as a place where research will be done,” Matthews said, who was also impressed with the design plans and the effort put forth to incorporate an environmental consciousness into the reconstruction.

Warkentin stressed that Fanshawe needed this facility in order to expand, rather then jeopardizing the green space reserved within the main campus.

Warkentin also said the new building will open space on the main campus for the Health Sciences program to expand.
