Student hands make Gala happen

In one magical night over 250 prominent London community members were whisked away on a five country Asian odyssey, known as Fanshawe College's Asian Occasion Gala. Thousands of hours of preparation and over 400 students from 21 of the college's programs transformed the Student Centre from cafeteria, to Asian wonderland, as a kick off to Fanshawe's 40th anniversary celebrations.

Students created every aspect of the evening from the Asian inspired decorations, art, music, food, even the kimonos being auctioned off and modeled through out the night. Student volunteers worked around the clock to ensure the ambiance was just right for participants to fully engage themselves into Asian culture.

“At Fanshawe College, we not only teach, we do. It's not only important students are taught how to do something, they have to do it,” says Coordinator of Tourism and Hospitality studies Dale Dolson. “What makes this event so great, is getting to show the students off, and letting students from the different programs work together to create one great product, just like in the industry.”

AChannel News anchor Dan MacLellan played tour guide and Master of Ceremonies for the evening's events, followed by remarks from Fanshawe College President, Dr. Howard Rundle, Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best, and the Chair of the Board of Governors, Ms. Kathryn Munn.

Throughout the evening, Fanshawe students, Serin (Jeff) Hong, and Yaqiong (Grace) Lou played traditional Asian instruments and music to capture the Asian feel. The Chinese Student Association contributed to the entertainment as well, by constructing beautiful origami pieces, which were later framed and given away to lucky attendees.

From the Asian kites hanging from the ceiling, to the carefully constructed lanterns which made up the centerpieces for the tables, Fanshawe students made sure all bases were covered. In addition to the student made decorations, Mrs. Noreen Nolan donated her personal Chinese Kimono exhibit purchased from local vendors in the city of Chungking between 1919-1935.

“This has been a total collaborative team effort which could only have been accomplished with many hands involved,” said Wella Nolan from the faculty of Art and Design.

Five courses of traditional Asian cuisine were beautifully constructed and served by Fanshawe's culinary and hospitality students, with hors d'oeuvres and traditional cocktails to start the evening. The meal was topped off with green tea and a fortune cookie.

AChannel, Siemens Global Network of Innovations, Hicks Morley Barristers and Solicitors, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Highstreet Asset Management Inc., and Nash Jewellers were all sponcers of the evening. As well a sincere thanks to those individuals as well as community friends and partners who generously donated goods and/or services to complement our auction items, as well as all of the students who worked hard to ensure the evening was a success.
