Exec Corner: Fanshawe impresses visitors

This past weekend, I had the luxury of hitting the town with my older brother and his friend from Waterloo. They have both visited London before, but this time we had a little more time. So, I decided to take them both on a tour of the campus.

Now, it was Saturday morning and they were both recovering from the night before, which was an amazing time, like always in London. But, to my surprise, they both were excited to get a glimpse of what I have experienced here in my three years at Fanshawe. We started the tour by grabbing breakfast at the Oasis. We sat down with our meals in the Student Centre. To my surprise my brother and his friend looked around while eating and were amazed at the architecture and design of the building. After breakfast I took them through a quick tour of the school. They saw the Out Back Shack, the Athletic Department, the bookstore and all the way to B Building. They saw classrooms, cafeterias, the gym, facilities, and the school services and was impressed with everything.

I guess you just take things for granted if that is all you have ever known. I looked around with them and began to appreciate what we have here at Fanshawe. My brother went to two colleges in Ontario and was very impressed with the campus and facilities. His friend who attended a university in Nova Scotia and another in Ontario was also very impressed with the campus and opportunities and services available to students at our school. His impression of an Ontario college before taking the tour was that they were on a lesser scale — financially, socially, academically, and athletically — than the much-heralded ‘university'. After the tour, his views had gone 180o. He marveled at the size of the campus, the friendliness of the staff and the accessibility of the school. One other thing he was extremely impressed by was the cleanliness of the school. He stated that the schools he attended never had as clean as hallways, classrooms, and eating establishments as does Fanshawe College. This takes me back to my initial comment that I feel students here at Fanshawe don't really know how good they have it, because most have not had another post-secondary experience at another school.

So, I'm challenging students out there to come closer together. Be more of a community, go see a Fighting Falcon sporting event, join a club, etc. More importantly, take care of your school and take pride in it. It's your experience. The more you put in to, the more you will receive and the greater the experience will be.
