Sports in Seconds: Colts take football's biggest game

They did it!

The Indianapolis Colts defeated the Chicago Bears 29-17 on February 4 in Super Bowl XLI to become the undisputed professional football champions of the NFL and the world.

The years of disappointment and anguish are simply a bleak memory for this Colts die-hard as a result of their great accomplishment.

Though it was not pretty, the Colts got the job done and did what they needed to do in order to win the first-ever rain-soaked Super Bowl.

Starting the game off with basically the worst-case-scenario, a 92-yard kick return for a touchdown on the opening kick-off by Devin Hester of the Bears just 15 seconds into the game, gave Chicago an early lead and early momentum.

On the Colts first drive, quarterback Peyton Manning threw an interception, and after this, believe me, I was considering jumping off the balcony of a buddies small apartment in Kitchener.

But luckily for myself, and for the Colts, they re-grouped and began dominating the game thereafter.

In a sloppy, turnover filled first half, three for each team, the Colts clawed their way back and went into halftime with a 16-14 lead.

The second half was basically all Colts, with a little help from the atrocious play of Bears quarterback Rex Grossman, who ultimately threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter, one to Colts defensive back Kelvin Hayden who returned his interception 56 yards for a score, icing the victory for the Colts.

It was a very exciting and proud moment for myself watching the Colts become victorious, I had stuck by them threw many disappointing playoff losses in the past few years, and to see them lift the Lombardi Trophy over their heads was very fulfilling.

I'm guessing Michael Veenema was praying for my Colts in the past couple weeks, thanks Mikey.

Another aspect of Super Bowl 2007 that made me extremely happy was the fact that Manning officially removed the monkey off his back, and took himself away from the company of Dan Marino on the list of ‘best quarterback never to win a Super Bowl'.

I always had to defend Manning, saying that ‘he'll win it someday,' and a lot of my friends would laugh and the consensus by them was that he would never win the big one or that he was a perennial choker.

Well my friends, Manning is currently the Super Bowl MVP and he can undeniably be placed amongst the NFL's all-time great quarterbacks, if not the greatest ever.
