Shores of Normandy bank on new sound

Looking for a brand new sound? I got something for you then and it comes in the form of Shores of Normandy.

The first thing I'd like to get off my chest is how sweet their name actually is, however, lead vocalist Phil Froese does a great job of explaining the sentiment behind the band's moniker.

“The name is based around the idea of how a foreign beach today was the scene of one of the greatest battles of all time,” Froese said. “I guess it's a place with a history of violence. We tried to make the name peaceful sounding, but as soon as you hear the word ‘Normandy,' peace is the last thing you'll think of. It's just good imagery I guess, everyone loves the beach right?”

These guys certainly aren't new to the music scene either. I've known Froese, Matt Bray (drums), Henry Bartsch (guitar) and Terrell Parker (bass) since high school. The only member I don't know personally is Adam Weber (guitar), but from what I've heard on Myspace.com he can rip- it-up on guitar very nicely, no lie, and I encourage you to check it out for yourself.

Shores of Normandy is the remnants of the band Black Top Recess, who at the time of dismemberment decided it was time for something new.

“We've reworked things quite a bit in a lot of ways, I no longer play guitar in the band, Terrell is back as the bassist and we have Weber on guitar now,” explained Froese. “We are working a lot harder with this band and set goals for ourselves. Weber's skill on the guitar and in song writing basically lit a fire under our asses and pushes us all to be the best we can be. Re-forming was really refreshing, we're way the fuck heavier and are a straight up metal band now”.

Shores of Normandy draw influence from Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying and Poison the Well. These guys are looking to musically please the masses but on top of that they are looking for some respect from the music scene too. In only two months Shores of Normandy's manager, Adam Martin of Eye See You Records, has busted his ass to get these guys a crazy amount of shows all over Ontario, based around their idea to promote themselves to the fullest extent.

“We want to come out with our own sound right off the bat if we can, but playing a lot of shows makes any band better,” added Froese. “We want to play as many shows as we can while we're still a new band in order to get our name out there, and to keep it fresh in people's minds.”

If this all really peaks your interest, or you're just simply bored by all the same crap around these days, you can check these guys out at The Embassy Hotel on February 17 and the cover charge is only $5.
