Career & Summer Job Fair 2007, on February 13, is an excellent opportunity for you to practice your networking and interview skills while obtaining valuable information about potential employers and career opportunities. Come to ‘J' Gymnasium between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. prepared to meet with approximately 150 employers who will be on campus promoting careers with their companies. Hosted by Fanshawe's Career Services Department, Career & Summer Job Fair 2007 provides you an opportunity to meet face to face with employers on campus.

Make no mistake, despite the fact that many other students are attending and company representatives are speaking with dozens of people, how you look and conduct yourself will make an impression. You can treat this as a casual day on campus and stroll around without much direction, or you can prepare yourself to make valuable contacts and perhaps get your foot firmly in the door for a great job following graduation. A career fair is also an event that can assist co-operative education students in their search for a suitable placement.

Dress as if you were going to a job interview. Wearing professional looking dress pants (or for women a skirt), shirt and jacket (and for men a tie) will give you a polished edge over those who arrive in jeans with t-shirts and knapsacks. Check your grooming and watch-out for overdoing make-up, jewelry, cologne or after-shave. Bring an easy to handle folder to hold copies of your resumes and notepaper and pen for taking notes.

Review your own goals and objectives. If you are not firmly convinced of your specific career direction, take some time now to identify all the options you are considering and what areas you are anxious to learn about. When talking to company representatives your curiosity and willingness to explore are welcome as a starting point for discussion. Prepare to talk about your strengths and skills in addition to your interests and background. The employers may ask you some typical interview questions, but in the short time frame of a busy career fair they may be a bit more general and ask simple screening questions.

Included in this week's Interrobang was a list of companies who will be represented at Career Fair 2007. To prepare for your interaction with these employers create your own list of questions to ask to help you uncover information important to your decision-making and future contact with the companies. Included in the Career & Job Fair 2007 insert are some examples of questions you may get asked and ones you might wish to consider asking. Drop by the Career Services Office, Room F2010 before February 13 to pick up a copy.

Finally, remember to smile and offer to shake hands with the company representatives you speak to. Putting forward a positive attitude towards your program, your college and yourself will help to sell you as someone worth considering. This is your chance to shine!
