My Musical Ramblings: Top Metal picks of 2006

I know that this is late, but I really couldn't get my list finalized. Here we go with what is a super tough top 10 list. Send your feedback and comments in!

10. Burn In Silence — Angel Maker
This band came out of nowhere but their cool cover, which made me check them out. What I found on the disc was a band that blended the many different genres of metal into an awesome audio experience. This is an amazing debut metal disc. Top track: “Angle Maker.”

9. The Red Hot Chili Peppers — Stadium Arcadium
This is on the list for the simple fact that the Peppers were one of my favourite bands but they lost me around the time of Californication. This disc takes everything good the band has ever done (except their earlier punk/funk anthems), puts a modern twist on the songs and blends them into a package that can turn this person back into a fan of the band. Two CDs with little filler make this an instant buy. Top track: “Desecration Smile.”

8. Deftones — Saturday Night Wrist
Just like the Chili Peppers, this band had also lost me over the last few years. After many delays and fights within the band as well as their producer, the band delivered their most diverse and catchy CD since their debut. Top track: “Beware.”

7. Lamb of God - Sacrament
While this isn't the band's best ever, it still kicks the crap out of most of the stuff released this year. The band is more diverse in their arrangements and song styles but the catchiness factor isn't as high as some of their past releases — but it's still wicked. Pick up the deluxe version for an amazing DVD. Top track: “Redneck.”

6. Hoobastank — Every Man for Himself
If you read my reviews or are getting a certain vibe with this list, you may be shocked to see this band on here. Yes, people, I do listen to stuff either than extreme metal and this disc was an absolute joy to spin hundreds of times this year. The rock songs are excellent while the ballads (or toned down songs) are catchy as hell. Top track: “First of Me.”

5. Stone Sour— Come What(ever) May
This one was a surprise for me. I wasn't that big of a fan of their first disc but the band surprised me with a metal album (with some radio friendliness) that you can listen to the whole way through and easily go back for more. This is a surprise and one hell of an album. Top track: “30/30-150.”

4. Mastodon — Blood Mountain
Just like Lamb of God's newest, this is an amazing CD that should be on any metal head's best of the year list. New vocal sounds and layering make the CD something that you have to go back over and over to catch everything that happens in each song. The new disc just didn't hit me like Leviathan did. It's amazing, but didn't top their last disc. Get the deluxe version of this one for another great DVD. Top track: “Circle Of Cysquatch”

3. Deicide — Stentch of Redemption
If you want one hell of a non-relentless, no holds barred death metal album, look no further in this band's return to their glory days. Benton's vocal delivery and the new guitar line up kicks you right in the stomach (or nuts). Top track: “Walk with the Devil in Dreams You Behold.”

2. Amorphis - Eclispse
From the minute I heard this one, I knew Amorphis was back in prime form. The new vocalist really accentuates the band's return to a darker and metal form. I love those discs that can spin front to back and it's so good that you need it on again immediately. This is one of those discs. Don't miss it. Top track: “Brother Moon.”

1. Gojira — From Mars to Sirius
The buzz for this band is growing faster than Mastodon's was three years ago and when I first heard Gojira's first track off this CD, it beat my head in with how thick the guitars are and how wicked the production is. If you think metal is getting stale with the same-old scream-core-then-whine crap, spin this monster. This band will be HUGE within two years. Top track: “The Heaviest Matter in the Universe” and that title DOESN'T LIE.
