From the Editor: Arts & Holiday Issue
Dear readers,
Believe it or not, we have arrived at our final issue of Interrobang for 2024. It’s been a busy semester, complete with a wide range of news stories and cultural turning points. The new year will likely bring new questions, new fears, new concerns, and although you may be feeling uncertain about what comes next, Interrobang is proud to be your source of information through it all.
Our final issue of the year is, on paper, focused on the arts and the holiday season. But I think spiritually, this issue is about being human. Art and creation are at the root of the human experience. Music, social gatherings, cultural foods, holiday celebrations, and the universal instinct to make beauty out of nothing are the traits that define us as a species. As long as humans have existed, we have created.
As we look ahead to a future that feels increasingly confounding, I think this issue is coming at the perfect time. Our writers explore topics like their favourite holiday traditions and the history of music and film. Our cover, conceptualized and designed by student illustrator Caleigh Reid, connects the past and the present through the medium of art.
They say history is told by the winners, and while that may be true, I think in many ways, history is told by the artists. As we search for clarity in the coming months, I encourage you to look to the artists who will tell the stories of this time. And if you find yourself longing for a return to humanity, create something. Anything. Pick up the pen, the instrument, the cookware, the brush. There is healing to be found in the act of creation.
Sincerely,
Hannah Theodore
