Del Asher stands out among headliners

It's always a great surprise when you show up to take in the headliners and the opening act ends-up stealing the show.

On Tuesday, November 21, I hit the Salt Lounge to see a line-up of bands, which included headliners Greenley Estates and Drop Dead Gorgeous, two very generic- London scene bands. Seeing as how Del Asher was on the same bill I assumed they would be along the same lines as the head-liners, thankfully, I was gravely mistaken.

Del Asher easily stood out among the rest of the bands that night with their sweet melodic sound courtesy of Julian Tomarin on guitar/vocals, Chris Charkowy on guitar, Matt Murphy on drums and Bryan Coomber on bass.

I'd like to try and compare Del Asher to a few bands that have a similar sound, but they have managed to find their very own unique sound ranging from melodic and sweet sounding to fast and heavy.

The band was first formed by Tomarin in late 2004 in St. Catharines, but the current line-up didn't come together until last winter. After a steady group was established, the band began recording at Silo Studios with producer Julius Butty, the man who was responsible for Alexisonfire's hit CD “Watchout.” The result was a three-song demo entitled Greatest Hits, which seems pretty bold to me.

Del Asher plans on going back into the studio in the New Year to begin recording a full-length album with Julius Butty. The full length will hopefully be available next spring followed by a cross Canada tour and possibly a tour in the United States.

Aside from being lucky, as well as talented. enough to record with an amazing producer, Del Asher has been getting a lot of attention in other ways. London rock-radio station, FM 96, has taken notice of the band and have began playing their song “Close Enough to Say” on their Straight Outta the Box program, which highlights up and coming bands and CD releases.

Not all of the attention has been coming from through local venues. Del Asher was also offered CD distribution in Japan, due to myspace.com, but declined because they only had the three-song demo to offer.

Del Asher has accomplished a lot in a short period of time and things only seem to be looking up for them. If you're interested in what Del Asher has to offer, check them out on Myspace.com for more information about up coming shows and to have a listen to a few of their songs. Also, tonight, Friday, November 24, Fanshawe MIA student, Dan Price, will be playing at The Wick with his band The Jostling Hostiles. The show starts around 11 pm and is absolutely free.
