Classic Metal Review: Classic Faith No More

When people ask me for my list of favourite bands and/or bands that have influenced me musically, one band that is always on that list is the late, great Faith No More. Yeah, I know it sounds cliché to say nowadays, with all the bands that have said they are an inspiration just to sound cool, but coming from me, it's genuine. Let's take a look at one of the coolest albums to hit the early 90s.

Faith No More — The Real Thing
While it was released in 1989, The Real Thing didn't impact the music world until early 1990 when Faith No More released their only top-ten hit, “Epic.” Even today, people will still dig that song when it is played on the radio, in a bar or in a party, but what the majority of the listeners don't realize is that there was (or is) so much more to Faith No More than that song.

Faith No More were pioneers when it came to crossing genres. One of the only other mainstream bands at the time combining many musical elements and being marketed to the masses were the Red Hot Chili Peppers. On The Real Thing, Faith No More crossed and fused metal with rock with rap with ballads with 80s electronica with funk. Yes, it sounds confusing, but the CD sounds awesome.

“From Out of Nowhere” is still one of my favourite lead-off tracks of all time. It's so damn catchy that you can't help but bob your head or listen to it again. “Underwater Love” combines more of a funk oriented backbone with 80s synth while “Zombie Eaters” shows a softer side of Faith No More but near the middle of the song, surprises the listener with a hard hitting assault of rock.

Speaking of surprising the listeners, I would have loved to see the looks on people's faces when they bought this (record/tape) CD expecting more of “Epic” and getting the metal onslaught that is “Surprise! You're Dead!” Another surprise that Faith No More shoved in people's faces was their version of Black Sabbath's “War Pigs.”

If you don't own this disc, go buy it now! I don't have too much more to say to get the point across that this is one of the coolest CDs I own (well, this one and the rest of their unbelievable catalogue). FYI: FNMs other EXCELLENT albums are Angel Dust, King for a Day, Fool For a Lifetime, and “Album of the Year.” Don't bother with the compilations because most of the songs on each CD are brilliant.
