New team is best chance for luck on the links

The best golf team in years hopes to bring Fanshawe home some hardware.

The Fanshawe Falcons golf team is primed for another season, and looking forward to their goal of reaching, and medalling in, the provincial and national tournaments. With eight men on the squad, head coach Andy Shaw has high hopes for the team.

“This years team is definitely one of the best that we've had since I've been here,” said Shaw, who enters his fourth season as head coach. “The players tryout scores were the best I've seen in four years, and they did so at the difficult River Road Golf Course.”

Returning players on the team include last seasons Rookie of the Year Matt Tindale, as well as Todd Allen and Lee Riendeau. Freshman standouts on the team include Chad Lobsinger and Nathan Richichi.

No women tried out for the squad this year, something Shaw sees as very unfortunate. Shaw said he felt some women might have been intimidated, and thought their skill level needed to be much higher then it really had to be.

“It is really hard to get two or three women on a team anyway, but I will have to do some more recruiting this upcoming winter,” said Shaw.

The golf team competed in the Durham College Golf Tournament on September 19th and had a mediocre showing. Shaw said the team finished, “in the middle of the pack.”

“It wasn't to our true potential. Nerves and inexperience were factors for our younger players, but it should prove to be a good eye-opener for them.”

Tindale recorded a score of 79, Allen recorded an 80, and Lobsinger rounded out Fanshawe's top three with an 83.

The golf team will travel to Windsor on September 22nd and 23rd for the St. Clair Golf Invitational. After that stop the team will head back to London on September 24th for the Fanshawe Golf Tournament held at the Fanshawe Golf and Country Club.
