Fanshawe reclaims national silver medal in cross country

Falcons repeat as national silver medalists.

The Fanshawe Falcon men's cross country team captured a silver medal at the 2006 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Running Open Championship hosted by the Institute of Agriculture Technology at the Saint-Hyacinthe Campus in Quebec on November 11.

The team consisted of John Mason, sixth overall, Sean Cunningham, 15th overall, Ben Ntambara, 18th overall, Ben Dobie, 28th overall, Chris Novakowski, 33rd overall, and Isak Wall, 40th overall.

Individually, Mason's sixth place finish earned him a spot on the All-CCAA Cross Country team.

The other seven runners representing Fanshawe were, Josh Ackworth, Casey Kulchycki, Jon Steven, Marko Zaja, Joshua Ward, Nadjub Faci and Brian Lake.

Mason, who battled a back injury much of the year, said the team performed well this year in the wake of last seasons success.

“It was another great year for us,” Mason said.

“After last year's huge season being provincial champs and silver medalists at nationals, and losing some key members of the team, we were worried about how this season would go.”

Although conditions were not the greatest, Mason said the team showed a lot of determination to produce the silver medal.

“Everyone on the team worked extremely hard giving their best efforts all the time and never giving up,” Mason said.

“The team really showed their toughness and determination at nationals when everyone had a job to do to help us be successful, and they did it in the mud and the wet and cold of Quebec.”

Mason said the hard work of the support staff including; head coach John Loney, assistant coaches Ron Becht and Shannon Clancy, team trainer Nadia Rusan, and team manager Jessica Shred was vital to the team's success.

“The athletes and the coaches and the support staff all came together to form a super powered group that worked together and supported each other like a family. It was pretty amazing,” Mason said.
