If your friends don't dance then they're no friends of mine

My girlfriend and I don't share the same musical tastes. For those of you in the same situation you'll undoubtedly know what kind of trouble this can cause. Car rides are a battle, and seeing as she is the owner of the car she usually wins. But couples should share things. So when she asked me to join her at Sarah McLachlan show this past summer I said…no. She asked again, and then again. Like any good boyfriend faced with incessant nagging (I may be exaggerating a bit here) I gave in.

Now, I don't mean to dump all over Sarah McLachlan. I wouldn't count myself among her fans but her music isn't bad. I work part-time in a grocery store so I'm familiar with much of her catalogue and classic Canadians should be respected. What was really turning me off was the $75 ticket price. Ticket prices are a problem, especially for cash-strapped students like myself, but I'm not going to waste your time complaining about this as I'm sure you would agree with me anyway (hint, hint TicketMaster).

What surprised me most about the show was that despite the hefty ticket price, nobody seemed to want to really enjoy themselves. The audience, with the exception of the opening and closing songs, remained seated and staring (for the most part) blankly towards the stage. On closer inspection most people weren't even actually watching the stage and were instead looking at the overhead video monitors.

I didn't feel it was my place to shout out to everyone that they could have had the same experience — with more comfortable seating - at home for the cost of a DVD, so I just sat there, too. A few brave souls got up and danced in the aisles for a couple of songs but no one joined them.

So the message I'm trying to get across is this, while you are out enjoying the many good shows your FSU is putting on this year here at Fanshawe or elsewhere around the city, DANCE! Dance or jump or shuffle your feet but for goodness sake get your ass out of your chair and enjoy the show. Trust me, the more you involve yourself in the show the more you get out of it.
