SAC opens up at first meeting

The newly elected Student Administrative Council (SAC) met last week to discuss the wants, needs and goings-on of students across campus, including revamping the student health plan.

The first SAC meeting of the year opened with some very interesting speeches that were prepared by the executive council members. Each member discussed what he or she has been working on over the school year, as well as what goals he or she is working toward for the near future.

Many of the SAC reps are still seeking out class representatives for their divisions. These are student volunteers who serve as a direct link between the students and their SAC reps, and part of their duty is to consult classmates on how they feel about the happenings throughout the school and within the FSU. If anyone is interested in one of these positions you should contact your SAC divisional representative.

The most interesting part of the SAC meeting was when the consent items were discussed. Consent items are issues brought to the Executive Council that need to be voted on. One issue that was brought up will affect students who opt to use their Health Plan next fall: The FSU is looking to include dental coverage in the Student Health Plan for September, 2008. This could be an interesting prospect because the health plan currently does not include dental coverage. The proposed coverage would cost an additional $72 per student and would cover a significant amount of dental expenses, to a maximum of $500 per year. The option to opt out of the Student Health Plan (including the dental coverage) will still be available, as well as the option to opt dependents in.

At the next SAC meeting there will be a vote to determine whether or not a referendum will be held on the extended coverage. If the council members vote to hold a referendum, students will have the opportunity to vote either for or against the proposed changes to the health plan.

John b. Young, FSU Operations Manager, was at the meeting, and he made everyone aware of several awesome events that are coming up, such as “Kick Ass Country Pubs” (November 14, 2006) and “Sex Toy Bingo” (November 20, 2006). You can find out more about these events and many others that are happening over the next few weeks by going to the Fanshawe Student Union (FSU) website, http://www.fsu.on.ca/calendar.asp, and viewing the November 2006 calendar.

The SAC reps were given an opportunity to deliver speeches and bring up any concerns to the executive council. One example of an issue that was brought by James Millistver, representing the Building Technology division, was of the eight computers that are not functioning properly in the new F2006 homework lab. This issue will now be investigated and hopefully theses computers will be back in commission soon.

Some other issues that were voted on include: Fanshawe Student Life Fund proposals (these are proposals to receive funding for non-mandatory field trips), proposals for funding to begin new clubs or continue old clubs, and the new poster policy.

It was an amazing experience to attend a SAC meeting and I am looking forward to attending the next one on November 20, 2006 and updating my fellow students on all of the important issues that are discussed. Do not forget to check out the Fanshawe Student Union website to learn more about upcoming events and your Student Government: http://www.fsu.on.ca. Remember, you may always contact your SAC Representatives and the Executive Council. They are friendly, approachable and professional people, and it is obvious that their top priority is the student — you!
