President's Perspective: It's all about Halloween

Last year I was lucky enough to have gotten to be the VP who got to write in the Exec Corner section when it was Halloween. And this year, I get to write every week, so it's my Halloween article once again!

This is seriously my favourite holiday. Yes, birthdays are fun, Christmas is fun. But there are two things wrong with these holidays.

Birthdays are all about you. Yes, it is fun when everything is about you for one day, but honestly it's a little selfish (not that I am complaining!) Christmas is great, but there is so much pressure on buying gifts, and making it a “happy” holiday, and making sure you have a lot of money, and attending many commitments. It's just a big confusing holiday that usually never ends up how you thought it would.

But with Halloween you can't go wrong. Halloween has nothing to do with you. It has to do with kids. And who doesn't love kids? It's about making them happy on this holiday. And that can easily be done with $20.00 worth of chocolate bars and chips that you buy to give out. Twenty bucks to see many children smile? Priceless!

This is the first Halloween I am having in my new house as well. So, as difficult as it is to convince my boyfriend to dress in costume with me to give out candy, the decorations are up, and our house is starting to look spooky. (But not too spooky…because no one likes when kids cry.) I cannot wait to sit out on the front porch, with my bowl of candy, and hear “Trick or Treat”.

Not only are kids a great part of Halloween, but so are costumes. This is the one excuse that you have, to pretty much wear whatever you want, without being judged. It's like a visit to the Sault, no one judges you there. (I speak from experience.)

Halloween is a chance to see people let loose and pretend to be someone else for a day. This is kind of why I don't tend to gravitate towards people who dress up like machete-wielding, scary mask wearing creatures. (Honestly though, why did you choose to be that? I don't want to know!!!)

And I loved decorating at work too! I have one of the giant spiders hanging from the ceiling, caution tape, and a glow in the dark spider web I KNOW can be seen by the Falcon residence at night, and much, much more. Every day when I walk in, I get super excited as I count down to the special day.

And another great part of Halloween is the specials on TV! Oh my goodness, its better than chocolate! Charlie Brown, Twitches, and of course, the annual Simpson's Halloween special. I can hear you laughing at me as you read this, but you damn well know you watch it! The really scary ones are on as well, but since I don't know the names of them, you will have to use “Channel 10” yourselves.

And last but not least, I warned people last year, and I will do it again. Don't knock my Halloween spirit. I can't help that this holiday makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, the way that you do when you cuddle a kitten, or spend Valentine's Day with your loved one. Maybe this is a small view into my life, and what I find makes me warm and fuzzy, and I guess it's a little creepy.

Have a Happy Halloween to all!
