Musical Ramblings: Gojira vocals grade high

Gojira — From Mars to Sirius
During the summer, I got introduced to a bunch of new bands through demo CDs and just having spare time to search the Internet.

One of the finest gems that I found this summer was a track from this band called Gojira. If you're not up on your pop culture, Gojira is actually Japanese for Godzilla, which was the band's actual first name, too.

After legal battles, the band changed their name to Gojira and released a well received first CD and DVD over in France. They got noticed and signed onto Listenable Records/Prosthetic Records (www.prostheticrecords.com) and their newest CD, “From Mars to Sirius,” was released at the end of August.

For fans of metal and heavier types of music, this CD will not disappoint you one bit. The sludgy guitar work is similar in tone to some of Cathedral's releases but have even more of an ass-kicking vibe. The guitar work is well matched with the fine double bass drumming, and while some blast beats are used on this disc, it's far from being labeled a death metal record.

The vocal presentation is very strong from guitarist Joe Duplantier and although it is clean near the end of the record, his huffy, angered vocal delivery is perfect for this band's sound. Like I said before, no death metal, no cookie-monster vocals that turn many people off of the music.

The album is an excellent ride. It starts of in your face with “Ocean Planet” and although it keeps building and building, the last few songs on the disc actually mellow you out and are much tamer than the first half of the CD.

I was actually quite confused at first thinking about how they ordered the songs, but it makes sense after numerous spins.

For more information on the band and to stream their album, you can go to http://www.gojira-music.com. Make sure that you DEFINITELY check out the track, “The Heaviest Matter of the Universe,” because it's surely one of the heaviest tunes you'll hear. This song has become one of my favourites of all time, because it's that catchy and so well done while the disc as a whole has been one of the best surprises of the year and perhaps will get a spot in my top five list at the end of the year.

Make sure you also checkout the aforementioned www.prostheticrecords.com because I've picked up CDs over the past few months that kick ass from artists that are signed to this label (hell, they were Lamb of God's first label).
