Sports Briefs: Falcons in the thick of OCAA action

Men's basketball wins opening tournament
The Fanshawe Falcon Men's basketball team defeated George Brown 79-63 in the final of the Durham College Tip-Off invitational tournament claiming the championship. The Falcon's Jabari Cooper was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament and the Falcon's Omar Sybliss was named to the tournament All-star team. The Falcons participated in the annual Alumni game on Saturday October 21 and open the regular season on October 25 when they visit Lambton College.

OCAA playoffs on horizon for women's soccer team
The four top teams in the OCAA West division have been established, however the final week of the season will determine the placement of Humber College, Sheridan College, Mohawk College, and Fanshawe for the quarter-finals in the OCAA playoffs. The Falcons finished up their regular season against Conestoga College on Wednesday October 18. Pending the result of several games, the Falcons will likely host a playoff game on Sunday October 22 at 12:00 p.m. The Falcons are led by Sarah Nishakawa and Amanda Ruberto who each have 3 goals this season.

Men's soccer team playoff bound
The Fanshawe Falcon's men's soccer team finished up the regular season schedule by defeating Conestoga College 4-3 on October 17th. The Falcons finished second in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) West division with a 4-1-3 record, clinching a playoff birth. The Falcons will likely travel to Durham College on Saturday October 21 for a 3:00 p.m. game or to George Brown College for a 5:30 p.m. contest. The Falcons are led by sophomore sensation Greg Remijn who leads the team with 7 goals, and Fidel Villanueva and Ebenezer Owusu who each have 3 goals on the year.

Women's hockey intramurals under way
Competing in a league hosted by the University of Western Ontario (UWO), Fanshawe College has two teams participating in the league whose games are played at Thomson Arena on the UWO campus. The recreational team lost its first contest 3-2 to Phil's Phillies while the competitive team lost 4-1 to the Ice Machine Hockey Team. The recreational team next plays on Monday October 23 at 9:00 p.m., and the competitive team plays on Tuesday October 24 at 9:30 p.m.

Cross-country teams both place 3rd at St. Clair invitational
The Fanshawe Falcon men and women's cross-country teams both placed 3rd in the St. Clair College Open meet held in Windsor on Saturday October 14th. Ben Ntambara was the top Falcon runner finishing 13th with a time of 29:55.2 in the men's 8 km division. Susie Miner was the top women runner from Fanshawe who finished 11th overall with a time of 21:31.4 in the 5 km run.
