mother!: Not for the faint of heart

Though Jennifer Lawrence may have given an incredible performance in her latest film mother!, the movie as a whole pushes boundaries a little too far.

Looking for something to do on date night? Are you an expecting mother or are already a mother of a young child? Are you easily upset? Then the new horror, mystery movie mother!, directed by Darren Aronofsky, is not for you.

Good horror movies that resonate in people are often ones that push boundaries, however, mother! may have pushed it a bit too far.

Taken place in a beautiful house that appears to be in the middle of nowhere, mother! features a husband and wife (played by Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem) whose marriage is tested when uninvited guests enter their home, disrupting their peaceful and tranquil paradise.

If you went into the movie with just watching the trailers, then that is as much as you would have known the movie was about, but through some horrifying and disturbing imagery, there is a much deeper story laying beneath mother!

As seen from many interviews with Jennifer Lawrence, the film has a strong allegory of religion to it. Without giving anything more away, if you are unfamiliar with some of the stories and characters in the Bible, then you will more than likely completely miss this allegory.

Also, without understanding the poetic and artistic underlying messages, this movie at face value is not that great and will seem fairly disgusting for no reason.

However, for the first probably hour and forty-five minutes of this film, you will be faced with feelings of boredom, confusion and most of all, frustration (this was probably one of the most frustrating movies I have seen in a long time). While the film sets and music scores were put together perfectly, we are left with a movie whose plotline is lost (to most viewers).

Viewers are constantly seeing uninvited guests enter the house, but receive no explanation as to why and are just left with the multiple swirling, close up shots of Jennifer Lawrence. While she is beautiful to look at, I almost wish we got to see the fire that Katniss Everdeen had, to bring some more excitement to the film.

Even through the confusing plotline and boring scenes, I have to give props Jennifer Lawrence and her incredible portrayal of “mother”. Not only was her acting impeccable, creating a truly believable character, she had to act out some pretty traumatising scenes that only a few actors would be able to do successfully.

mother! is definitely one of those horror movies that pushes the boundaries a little too far, but with possibly a little bit more explanation, it would have been a stellar movie.

Without some of the background knowledge to the allegory, viewers are left with a pretty brutal movie. Again, definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you do end up seeing mother! in theatres, make sure you stay for the credits. You may just get a better glimpse into the underlying story called mother!
