New Age Gentleman: Students need to learn some manners and have some respect for each other

Hello dear readers,

I have been rather busy as of late, so please excuse me for the late article. First of all, I would like to welcome all the new students to Fanshawe College, and I hope you all have a very productive year. That said, I wish these newcomers had a better sense of style or mannerisms, but I guess that's what this column is for.

Just the other day I was walking down the hallways when something happened behind me that reminded me of my high school days; a couple was walking behind me a little way back, but they were talking so loud they might as well have been right behind me. They were so loud I'm surprised none of the teachers came out of their rooms to complain.

If there is one thing I truly despise, it's these fools who think they are on top of the world now that they are out of high school and most of them out of their parent's homes. They remind me of Tony Montana in Scarface, freed from the tyranny of high school and their parents. Out on their own with total freedom at their hands, they look up and see the same words that Tony saw; “The world is yours.”

That's the problem; they are living this out like it was a movie by being loud and obnoxious little freaks in the hallways. Just because you have no one to answer to in your little hovel of an apartment doesn't give you the right to be disrespectful. It would be a wonder to me if some actually walked, not stomped, ran or staggered, down a hallway and talked at a respectful level. There is no need to burp as loud as you can or shout, “LET'S GO TO THE OUT BACK SHACK!” at the top of your lungs.

Clowning around is fun; no one said studies and classes have to be entirely serious, but give the teachers a little respect by shutting off your cell phones and lowering your voices among your friends outside of the classroom. The teachers don't care if you're in their class or not, they get paid regardless so don't be stupid and sling around, “I'm paying for this class so, yada yada yada yada…” That's right; you're paying for the class. So why not sit down, shut up, and listen to what you're paying for? Others are paying for that same right and they are not getting what they are paying for when a little group of kids think they can talk about the latest CD or whatever during class time. Thank you very much, let's not let our egos run our lives and keep the swelled heads out of the school.

Think you have good manners? Want to prove you're not a slob? Email the New Age Gentleman at mistah_j@yahoo.com if you want to set the record straight.
