Rain shortens OCAA Golf Championship

Mother nature just would not cooperate.

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Golf Championships held at the FireRock Golf and Country Club in Komoka was cut short on October 4 due to rain. The winners were decided based on the results of the first round.

Fanshawe's Wes Ledoucer captured a silver medal as he fired a 71 putting him in a tie for second place in the men's division. Also, Humber College swept the team competitions for both the men and women.

Men's Athletic Officer Ernie Durocher said the weather Gods just did not cooperate.

“We called it at 12:00 p.m., the radar was not favourable, so we called a meeting and that was it,” Durocher said.

Durocher, along with other OCAA Golf Championship committee members Jake Norris, FireRock golf pro, Mike Duggan, Sr. convener for OCAA Golf, and Andy Shaw, Fanshawe Golf head coach, held a meeting with all the coaches from the OCAA and decided to call off the rest of the Championship.

Ledoucer was the lone bright spot for the Falcon team as he now qualifies to represent the OCAA in the 2006 PING Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Golf Open Championship in Sainte-Foy, Québec from October 10 to October 13.

Durocher said Ledoucer has had previous success at the FireRock course.

“Wes had four previous rounds in the low seventies during practice rounds on this course,” Durocher said.

According to Durocher the event hosted by Fanshawe was still a success as many individuals expressed very positive remarks regarding the Championship.

“People loved the golf course and all the comments were very favourable,” Durocher said.

“We had a shot-gun start type approach to the tournament, so the timing of the Championship was sped up considerably. Unfortunately we had to call off the final day of competition.”

The men's team finished in last in the OCAA Division one standings, and the women finished third in the women's division capturing a bronze medal. The men finished 28 strokes behind the Humber College men, while the women finished 60 strokes behind the women from Humber College.
